- What Is COD in Water? Causes & Treatment | Water Check
What high chemical oxygen demand (COD) in water means, where it comes from, the risks for your operation and how it can be treated. What is COD - Chemical Oxygen Demand and what does it mean in water? High Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in water is often a sign of organic pollution, which can come from various sources. Here’s a detailed breakdown of possible sources, health and environmental impacts, treatments based on WHO guidelines and SANS241, and operational concerns in addressing high COD levels. Possible Sources of High COD in Water Industrial Discharges: Industries such as food processing, textile, petrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals often discharge organic materials and chemicals that raise COD levels. Agricultural Runoff: Pesticides, fertilizers, and organic waste from farms can elevate COD due to organic compounds and nitrogenous substances. Domestic Wastewater: Untreated or poorly treated sewage contributes organic matter that increases COD. Landfills and Urban Runoff: Leachates and surface runoff from urban areas can carry organic contaminants into water sources. Natural Sources: Organic material from decaying vegetation, algae, and wildlife can also increase COD naturally, although usually to a lesser extent. Health Impacts: High COD itself doesn’t directly indicate a health risk but suggests a high organic load, often associated with pathogens, heavy metals, and toxic compounds, which can harm human health. Contaminants contributing to high COD (e.g., certain organic chemicals, heavy metals) can cause skin irritations, gastrointestinal issues, and chronic health problems if ingested over time. Environmental Impacts: Elevated COD can reduce dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in water, stressing aquatic ecosystems and potentially leading to fish kills. Decomposition of organic matter in high-COD water can release ammonia and sulfur compounds, causing unpleasant odors and affecting water quality. Eutrophication: High COD from nutrient-rich pollutants, like nitrogen and phosphorus, can promote algal blooms, impacting biodiversity and water usability. Operational Concerns Monitoring and Maintenance: Regular Monitoring: Continuous COD, DO, and pH monitoring are essential to ensure treatment effectiveness. System Maintenance: Biological and membrane systems require regular maintenance to prevent fouling and biofilm buildup, especially in high-organic-load scenarios. Chemical Handling and Safety: Oxidizing Agents: AOPs and chlorine treatment require careful handling, as chemicals like ozone and hydrogen peroxide pose risks. Sludge Management: Treatment generates sludge, which needs safe disposal to prevent secondary contamination. Cost and Energy Considerations: High Energy Demand: AOPs and membrane filtration can be energy-intensive. Economic Feasibility: Small facilities may find costs prohibitive, which could impact treatment consistency. Process Control: Balancing pH and Alkalinity: High COD treatment may impact pH levels, which needs regular adjustment to comply with SANS241 standards. Managing Variability: Seasonal changes or sudden inflows of organic matter (e.g., after rainfall) can cause fluctuations in COD, requiring flexible treatment adaptations. Addressing high COD effectively relies on a well-monitored and maintained treatment process that aligns with WHO and SANS241 standards to protect health, environmental integrity, and operational efficiency. Treatments: WHO, Municipal By-laws and SANS241 standards focus on reducing organic pollutants and oxygen demand, aiming to restore water quality to safe levels. Aeration and Biological Treatment: Activated Sludge Process: Effective for treating wastewater by using microorganisms to break down organic materials. Biofiltration: Uses a filter with a microbial layer to degrade organic pollutants. WHO Recommendation: Biological treatment should follow initial screening for large particles. SANS241 emphasizes that treatment methods align with COD and DO limits. Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP): Ozonation: Uses ozone to oxidize organic materials, reducing COD levels. UV + Hydrogen Peroxide: This combination is effective for breaking down organic pollutants. WHO Guidelines: WHO suggests AOPs as effective secondary treatments for organic contaminants, especially when dealing with industrial effluents. Coagulation and Flocculation: Adds chemicals to coagulate and settle out organic pollutants, reducing COD. SANS241: Endorses coagulation for pre-treatment, especially for high-COD water from industrial sources. Membrane Filtration: Reverse Osmosis (RO): Filters out a wide range of organic and inorganic substances. SANS241: Recognizes RO as an efficient option, especially when COD levels are high and complex mixtures are present. Carbon Adsorption: Activated carbon filters can remove dissolved organic pollutants, which contribute to COD. SANS241 and WHO: Both recommend carbon adsorption as an effective option for drinking water treatment. SANS 241, Municipal by-laws and WHO guideline aims to protect environmental and public health and safety to ensure our waters are clean and free from harmful pollutants. - What Is Water Quality? | Water Check
What water quality means, how it is measured and why testing your drinking, irrigation or process water matters for health and equipment. What water quality refers to? The water we use for drinking, washing, and preparing food, comes from rainwater, surface water (rivers, dams etc.) and groundwater sources (springs and borehole water). The amount of fresh water available is limited. Water quality describes water’s suitability for use, concerning its chemical, physical and microbial properties, for drinking, irrigation, bathing, and effluent. Safe water should contain no chemical or radioactive substances, be free from disease-causing organisms and be non-corrosion and scaling forming. Water quality is measured by; Various analyses determine water quality and the suitability for the intended purpose, i.e. drinking, swimming, effluent, irrigation, bathing etc. Poor water quality can pose health risks to all organisms, including flora and fauna. Note: the suitability of water for gardening purposes depends on a number of other factors, such as climate and soil quality. Properties of Water Quality Chemical Water Quality: refers to the concentration of dissolved substances such as salts, metals and organic chemicals. Many chemical substances are essential for daily intake, but high concentrations make water unpleasant and cause illness. Physical Water Quality: refers to water properties determined by physical methods such as conductivity, pH and turbidity. These qualities mainly affect the taste, odour and appearance (aseptic) of the water. Microbiological Water Quality: refers to the presence of organisms that cannot be seen by the naked eye, such as viruses, protozoa and bacteria (pathogens). Many of these are associated with water-borne diseases. Microbial indicators indicate a potential risk for faecal pollution and infectious diseases, as it is costly and difficult to detect pathogens in water. Microbial indicators include Total Coliforms, E.coli, Faecal Coliforms and Heterotrophic Plate Counts. Why is it important to test your water quality? Water is the link between various communities and resources. What happens in catchment areas is reflected in the water quality throughout the entire system. The results of human activities in industry, construction, lifestyle and agriculture ultimately end up in the nearby rivers through run-off. If pollution occurs upstream, it runs downstream and eventually into our oceans. Water quality is dependent on the interaction within the river and its surrounding catchment area. The processes within the catchment area can either maintain a healthy ecosystem or disrupt it and degrade the water supply. Affecting water quality downstream and potentially, if severe enough, groundwater systems and our oceans as well. the concentration of dissolved oxygen bacterium levels salinity (amount of salt) turbidity (amount of material suspended) the concentration of microscopic algae presence of pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals and other contaminants REQUEST A QUOTE
- SANS 241:2025 & How to Read Your Water Report | Water Check
SANS 241:2025 moves drinking water quality from a checklist to risk-based management. See what changed and how to read your Water Check report. How to read your Drinking Water Report - SANS241 SANS 241 is South Africa's national standard for drinking water quality. The 2025 edition replaces SANS 241:2015 and changes the question from "did this sample pass?" to "are the risks in this water supply understood and managed?" Here is what that means, and how to read the report you receive from Water Check. What changed in SANS 241:2025 From checklist to risk. Comparing results against a table of limits is no longer enough. Water suppliers are expected to assess risks across the whole system, from the source through treatment and storage to the tap, and to build their monitoring around those risks. Core and risk-based parameters. A core set, such as E. coli and turbidity, is tested in every system. Others, such as certain metals, pesticides and disinfection by-products, are tested where the risk assessment shows they could be present. Tighter limits. Some limits are stricter. Turbidity, for example, must now be 1 NTU or lower, and the aluminium limit has dropped from 300 to 200 µg/L. Compliance is shown over time. One good result is not proof of safe water. Too little monitoring data is itself treated as non-compliance. Emerging contaminants. Substances such as pharmaceutical residues and PFAS are listed as parameters of concern, to be watched even though limits are not yet set. What this means for you If you have a borehole or rainwater tank at home, SANS 241 remains the benchmark for water you drink. Risk-based thinking simply means looking at your own system: what is near the source, how the water is stored, and what treatment is in place. If your business supplies water to staff, guests or customers, expect auditors to ask for a risk assessment and a monitoring programme, not only a lab report. We can help you choose the right tests and set a monitoring schedule. How to read your Water Check report Report details. The top of the report shows your report number, reference, who it was prepared for and the date. Review of results. This gives the overall outcome, Compliant or Not Compliant, and names the standard your sample was compared to. Results table. Each row is one parameter, grouped as Microbiological, Physico-Chemical or Macro Parameters. Compare the "Results" column with the "Standard limit (SANS 241)" column. Any result outside the limit is highlighted in red. Risk column. This tells you why a parameter matters and how urgently to act: Acute health: can cause illness after short exposure, such as E. coli or nitrate. Stop drinking the water until it is resolved. Chronic health: a concern over long-term exposure, such as fluoride. Aesthetic: affects taste, smell, colour or staining, such as chloride or sodium. Operational: shows how well your treatment or plumbing is working, such as turbidity, pH or heterotrophic plate count. Units and symbols. Most results are in mg/L. Bacteria are reported as a count per 100 mL or per mL, and turbidity in NTU. "≤" means "at or below", and "<" before a result means the level was too low for the laboratory to measure. Next steps. We explain the risks behind any red result and recommend treatment and retesting. One red result does not always mean your water is unsafe to drink. The risk category tells you how serious it is. - About Water Check | Independent Water Quality Consultant
Water Check is run by Michelle Wium, a former ISO/IEC 17025 technical signatory. Independent water testing and plain-English advice, with no filter sales. ABOUT WATER CHECK Clean, safe water is not a luxury—it is an absolute operational and biological necessity. Yet for most South African homeowners, estate managers, food producers, and agricultural operations, standard laboratory reports look like unreadable walls of numbers and chemical abbreviations. Commercial laboratories are structured for high-volume corporate contracts, frequently lacking the capacity to prioritize individual private clients or deliver accessible, friendly, and timeous feedback. Water Check was founded to bridge this critical gap between complex laboratory data and actionable water management. The business was built on a simple conviction: every client—from a single household testing a domestic tap to large-scale commercial operations—deserves dedicated, high-touch customer support and clear, actionable insights. Extensive Laboratory & Regulatory Experience Before founding Water Check, Michelle Wium served as a Laboratory Manager for almost a decade, and official ISO/IEC 17025 Technical Signatory for premier commercial testing facilities across Johannesburg and Cape Town. In this capacity, she validated, authorised, and interpreted complex analytical data across 32 distinct microbiological and chemical testing methods, operating strictly within ISO17025:2017. Having personally overseen the analysis of thousands of diverse water matrices—including deep borehole groundwater, municipal distribution networks, agricultural irrigation feeds, food processing facilities, and complex industrial effluent—she applies rigorous technical scrutiny to every sample processed. Why Independent Advisory Matters "When water testing is tied to selling water filters, the recommendation is almost always to buy a filter. At Water Check, we sell diagnostics, objective interpretation, and customised treatment solutions—never hardware. You receive honest, uncompromised clarity on whether your water complies with the SANS 241 standard, accompanied by precise technical guidance if remediation is genuinely necessary" Contact us
